American Reliable Insurance Company part of Assurant Specialty Property, a Fortune 500 Company has an immediate opening for an Underwriter.

 

Underwriter Job Description:

 

  • Conducts audits (in-house and travel to off-site agency), reviewing agency files, charting results, along with a written analysis, and providing recommendations for improvement.
  • Participates in daily workflow process, including, but not limited to: underwriting, phone queue, agency contact and concerns, meetings, reports, etc.
  • Builds strong working relationships with agency force to provide company philosophy, underwriting advice and direction, and obtaining and sharing agency needs and desires to management.
  • Manages specific territories by analyzing performance results and provide constructive feedback.  Seeks creative ways to lower loss ratios and increase production with agency force.
  • Works with and supports Product Management on product development and enhancement.
  • Responds to Department of Insurance complaints, and market conduct requests.  Provides moratorium notices to agencies and Special Agency Bulletins on policy changes.
  • Reviews standard personal lines applications for acceptance, modification, or declination, based on set company guidelines and fair underwriting judgment.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Travel to General Agency locations to conduct on site audits (In & Out of State).
  • Underwrite simple and/or more complex situations with potential higher risk exposure.
  • Monitor trends and identify needs for new or revised underwriting policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Resolve underwriting concerns with agency force.

 

Experience

  • Three or more years of related personal lines underwriting, decision making experience
  • Complete familiarity with use of computer systems, including desktop applications (Microsoft Office, Excel, e-mail, Internet)
  • Strong understanding of general statutory compliance requirements including  cancellation and non renewal guidelines, and sense of urgency to  comply.

Skills:   

  • Applies advanced problem solving skills.   Ability to address more complex problems and issues.
  • Ability to adapt to change (procedures, processes, and techniques). 
  • Solid communication skills required (includes both written and verbal).
  • Self-directed- can work effectively under minimal supervision.
  • Self starter, creative, teamwork oriented including ability and willingness to acquire and share ideas/expertise in a fast paced, changing environment.

Commerical Lines Lead Underwriter

The Commercial Lines Lead Underwriter monitors the risk selection process within assigned territory/General Agent. Performs regular underwriting audits at the General Agent's office.  Interact with internal departments and general agent to ensure outstanding customer service.  Analyzes data to determine coverages and rates.  Has contact with others to gather information on which to base and defend underwriting decisions.  Depending on area may have the following responsibilities: contact with Department of Insurance Personnel, create or review rating materials for accuracy, reply to Department of Insurance complaints and Market Conduct requests, communicate program changes to clients via bulletins, and/or review and recommend policy language changes.

 

Duties:

  • Tasks are substantially varied and complex.
  • Serves as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues.
  • Resolves the most complex issues and problems that potentially involve higher risk.
  • Ensures cooperation and coordination with other departments in the company.
  • Assists in developing revised standards and methods.
  • Engages in advanced quality assurance activities. 
  • Monitors trends and identifies the need for new or revised underwriting policies, procedures, and practices.

 

 

Experience:

  • 5+ years experience with strong knowledge in Commercial Lines P & C.
  • Prior supervisory/lead experience is desirable.

 

Supervision:

  • Works under minimal supervision.
  • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned tasks and goals.
  • Needs to be a self starter.

 

Skills:

  • Applies expert problem solving skills to the most complex of issues.
  • Ability to recognize and recommend areas needing improvement.
  • Experience with scheduling and coordinating team activities.
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal skills
